Pioneer women’s own words and archival photographs provide a glimpse of “what it was really like.” Includes 8 quilt patterns.
The result of years of primary research, this book provides a glimpse of the lives of women whose homesteading experience on the Great Plains began in dugouts and sod houses.
Archival photographs and unpublished diaries and letters enabled the authors to tell those women’s stories, often in their own words—women who, while struggling to survive, still found time for beauty, cutting scalloped edges on shelf paper, growing geraniums on their windowsills, planting roses in the yard, and piecing quilts.
The eight quilt patterns included in the book provide instructions for reproducing quilts patterned after antique quilts known to have been used by sod house homemakers.
